What is Lorem Ipsum? Placeholder text explained
Open any design template and you'll see it: "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…" — pages of Latin-looking gibberish. It's placeholder text, and there's a genuinely good reason designers have used it for decades.
What it is
Lorem Ipsum is dummy text used to fill a layout before the real words exist. It looks like Latin but is mostly nonsense — scrambled from a real Latin text by the philosopher Cicero, written around 45 BC. Printers have used it as filler since the 1500s, and it jumped to computers when early desktop-publishing software included it.
Why not just use "text text text"?
This is the clever part. The point of placeholder text is to show what a design looks like with realistic content but without the distraction of readable words. If you fill a mockup with real English, people start reading and critiquing the copy instead of the design. Repeating "text text text" looks unnatural and doesn't flow. Lorem Ipsum has a word-length and rhythm similar to real English, so paragraphs, line breaks, and spacing look authentic — but nobody gets pulled into reading it.
When to use it
- Wireframes and mockups — to see how much text a section holds and how it wraps.
- Templates and themes — demo content before the client's real copy arrives.
- Testing layouts — checking overflow, truncation, and spacing with variable amounts of text.
When not to
Don't ship it. The classic embarrassment is a website or printed brochure that goes live with "Lorem ipsum" still in place because someone forgot to swap in the real content. Placeholder text is for the draft stage only — always replace it before launch. And for final copy, if you need to check length, a word counter tells you exactly where you stand.
